The Perfect Weekend Itinerary: Delhi to Bir Billing in 48 Hours

Why Bir Billing Works as a Weekend Escape

Most people assume the Himalayas need a week. Bir Billing proves otherwise. It sits roughly 500 kilometres from Delhi, which means a Friday night departure gets you to pine-scented air by sunrise, and a Sunday evening return has you back at your desk Monday morning. The trick is timing the drive and not over-packing the days.

Friday Night: The Drive Out

Leave Delhi after dinner, ideally by 9 or 10 PM, to miss the Chandigarh-bound traffic crawl. The route runs via Chandigarh, Bilaspur, and Mandi before climbing through Joginder Nagar towards Bir. Overnight driving means you'll hit the winding ghats around dawn, which is when this stretch of Himachal looks its best, mist still sitting low in the Kangra valley.

What to Expect on the Road

  • Chandigarh to Mandi is fast highway; Mandi to Bir gets progressively narrower and slower
  • Stop at a dhaba near Bilaspur for parathas and strong chai
  • Keep warm layers in the car; the temperature drop after Mandi is sudden

Saturday: Takeoff, Tea, and Tibetan Lanes

Arrive at camp by mid-morning, check in, and if the weather window is good, head straight to Billing takeoff point for your first tandem paragliding flight. Billing sits at around 2,400 metres, and the glide down to Chaugan landing site takes you over tea gardens and the scattered rooftops of Bir in a way no photo quite captures.

Afternoon in Bir Village

  • Walk through the Tibetan colony and spin the prayer wheels at the local gompa
  • Visit Palpung Sherabling Monastery if you have an extra hour, it's one of the largest in the region
  • Grab Tibetan momos or thukpa at one of the small cafés near the main road

Evening is for slowing down. Back at camp, a bonfire under genuinely dark skies does more for weekend recovery than any spa ever could. This is also when most guests realise why people keep returning to Bir long after the paragliding high wears off.

Sunday: One Last Climb Before the Drive Back

If your legs are willing, a short morning hike towards Billing or one of the nearby waterfalls is worth the early wake-up. Alternatively, a slow breakfast with mountain views and a walk through the tea estates is equally satisfying. Either way, aim to start the return drive by early afternoon to avoid night driving fatigue on the way back into Delhi traffic.

Packing Notes for a Quick Turnaround

  • One warm layer, one light layer, the valley swings in temperature through the day
  • Comfortable shoes for both the flight landing and any walking
  • A power bank, charging points can be limited during the drive

Making the Most of Limited Time

A weekend in Bir Billing isn't about doing everything, it's about doing the right few things well: one flight, one walk through the monastery lanes, one night under proper stars. Everything else is a bonus.

If you'd rather skip the planning and just show up to a bonfire already lit, we'd love to have you at Camp Kelang this weekend.
